IPv6Override is a standalone Windows GUI tool for Windows desktops and servers to allow IT Administrators to change IPv6 settings. It is common for IT administrators to want to disable IPv6. This is often because of some unknown, networking-related issue, such as a name resolution issue. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 and newer versions, by default, favors IPv6 global unicast addresses over IPv4 addresses. Microsoft does not recommend that you disable IPv6 or its components. If you do, some Windows components may not function. This is especially notable where Microsoft Exchange Server is installed and the services fail to start because the DNS of the DC cannot be resolved due to IPv6 DNS being the preferred resolver. By setting “Prefer IPv4 over IPv6” in prefix policies instead of disabling IPV6, services such as Exchange can run correctly, whilst other components that rely on IPv6 can also run unaffected. This utility was written for the purpose of allowing IT Administrators to quickly modify various IPv6 settings to assist in troubleshooting and resolving issues relating to IPv6 and DNS resolution.
